What is a Mala Necklace?

 Mala necklaces seem to be everywhere these days. You may own a few mala necklaces, or have seen
ads for them pop up on your social media feed.

Though they may seem like the newest trend in jewellery, mala necklaces are actually an ancient ritual
with roots in the Far East.

In India and Tibet, mala necklaces have traditionally been worn and used for meditation and/or prayer.
In the Far East mala necklaces always use a natural wood or seed element as its base. The most common
base for a mala necklace in traditional practice are the Rudraksha seeds, which are considered a very
holy and protective seed.

Rudraksha seeds form naturally from the Rudraksha tree. They are found in the Himalayays in India and
Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia, Guam and Hawaii. Medicinally the Rudraksha are known to: heal many of
the mind and body ailments, be cooling when worn against the skin, reduce heart disease and lower blood
pressure, increase mental clarity, memory & general awareness, calm the central nervous system, quiet
the mind & free one from negative thoughts, increase immunity, energy and stamina, and rejuvenate the
entire mind and body.

Asian Yogis and Monks (including Buddha, the Dalai Lama, and Ghandi) found that merely wearing a
Rudraksha mala necklace deepened their states of concentration and tranquility, helping them meditate
for longer periods of time.
